Family of Seamen...

though having a distant relative's name being published on a news was not a new experience for me, this one gives a real "sigh of relief". I've always been on the lookout for a friend or a relative who might have been on the news who was on the profession of Seafarers, and this was one good news to hear although it was kind of tragic. He's one of my close uncles who was a distant cousin of my mom's and I was so relieved to read him survive this terrible ordeal.

Way to go Tito! you made the headlines! 2nd Engineer Ephraim Torre, uncle ko yan!

THE NINE Filipino seamen who survived their cargo ship’s sinking in the Baltic Sea on Nov. 1 arrived in the country Sunday night, thankful to be alive but traumatized by their ordeal.

"Grabe ang trauma namin. Halos hindi kami makatulog nang ilang gabi (We suffered grave trauma. We could not sleep for several nights),” Ephraim Torre, 47, told the Inquirer.

The group arrived at 7:25 p.m. from Frankfurt via Lufthansa Airlines.

The other survivors were Gerry Dupo, Gilbert Salido, Benedicto Agngarayngay, Manuel Barcelona, Rolando Esguerra, Leo Jose Talipe, Jose Noel Saquilayan and Wilfredo Ramos.

Seaman Danilo Paras and a Swedish colleague died in the mishap, Torre said.

Paras’ remains are expected to arrive in Manila on Tuesday.

The seamen crewed for the freighter MV Finnbirsch which sank between Sweden and Norway in bad weather.
